One of the great waves in the mindfulness and meditation space is the use of technology. There are more apps than we can count now. Some great meditation apps such as Calm, Meditation Studio, Headspace are used all over the world now. Wearable technology like the Muse Headband or Heart Math technology for heart coherence are brilliant technologies giving us real-time feedback of what is really happening and how we can re-calibrate our state of mind. These tech advances are not only making meditation process easier – but also acceptable! Its no more something reserved only for those seeking spirituality. Today meditation is a tool to enhance human potential. There meets science and spirituality.
Muse gives us feedback with its state of the art EEG measurement. It’s literally tracking our brain waves and translating our mental activity into guiding sounds of the weather. It has 7 sensors that measure these brain signals and convert it into real time neruo- feedback. They also have guided meditations that help you train your mind for calm and focus.
HeartMath on the other hand is measuring coherence of heart and brain. It’s yet another technology to improve emotional wellbeing. The focus of the technology here is to study the signals that go from the heart to the brain which have significant effects on brain function- such as attention, perception ,memory & problem solving. It uses its sensor to measure the heart rate variability (HRV).There is immense amount of research about what the value of HRV is for assessing ones state of mind & body. The Heartmath tech gives real time feedback and helps train coherence for syncing the brain and heart.
And then there is plenty of research and development being done to integrate virtual reality with meditation and emotional/mental well-being.
These are tools of the future. While many may feel these are distractions, I see them as tools to be more effective in meditation. The possibility of being able to access the best teachers, guides and meditations from the world at your finger tips today because of technology. These mindful & intentional tools may not take us to enlightenment faster but they definitely help us bring down the volume of thoughts and distractions, one mindful breath at a time.
